UCLA will celebrate GIS Day on November 14th from 10am until 2pm in Research Commons at the Charles E. Young Research Library. This year’s program features GIS and geospatial technologies employed in the humanities and will kick off with lightning talks by faculty and students including our own Maddie Yakal describing the three-dimensional mapping at Ifugao. After the lightning talks we encourage everyone to join in a humanitarian map-a-thon competition between UCLA and USC (more details below). USC just barely out-mapped us last year- let’s not let that happen again!Lunch will be provided to all that RSVP in advance.

Map-a-thon Challenge: Identifying infrastructure in Ebola at-risk areasThe evolving Ebola situation in the DRC makes it extremely urgent to map all tracks, pathways, health facilities and other infrastructure in towns and villages serving the borders. There is a severe lack of up-to-date and detailed maps of this area available to those involved in the fight to contain the outbreak. Please work with those of us on the ground to collect this life-saving information by remotely tracing borderland infrastructure.
