An Introduction to Glenstone Museum
Founded with the mission to seamlessly integrate art, architecture, and landscape, Glenstone is an art museum located on more than 230 acres of rolling hills and unspoiled woodland in Potomac, Maryland. The museum, opened in 2006 and expanded in 2018, offers nearly 60,000 square feet of exhibition space to showcase its collection of more than 1300 works by 200 contemporary artists. With its expansion, Glenstone now has the ability to welcome 100,000 visitors each year, and admission is always free.
The two-year conservation fellowship will provide a unique opportunity to work with Glenstone’s superlative collection of time-based media artworks. A major focus of the fellowship will be to research artworks and (when appropriate) migrate and ingest them into the Museum’s digital preservation system. Broadly, the fellow will be involved with the acquisition, loan, exhibition, documentation, and maintenance of media artworks. The fellow will also be responsible for evaluating current housing materials and preparing media components for cold storage. The fellow will continue efforts to stockpile components for artworks at risk for obsolescence. Due to the distinct challenges posed by time-based media art, there will be occasions to work with other conservators (including media specialists), museum professionals, galleries, artists, and their studios or foundations. The intended start date of this fellowship is mid-summer to early fall.
