Great Falls Public Library

Paraprofessional responsibility for performing technical library services to patrons that includes a range of informational services, including reference, technology support and inter-library loan work.  This position also provides support in the circulation department as needed.

Essential Functions of Work

Staffs the Reference Desk

  • Assisting patrons in making effective use of library
  • Providing readers advisory services for library patrons
  • Training and assisting users on procedures, policies, use of computer and related areas
  • Answering patron reference questions
  • Assisting patrons to use to the library catalog, library databases, MontanaLibrary2Go and other internet resources to retrieve materials and information
  • Assisting patrons with smart devices (tablets and phones)
  • Obtaining interlibrary loan items for the library or its patrons and completing requests for other libraries for various resource materials.
  • Assisting patrons to reserve Library materials or spaces
  • Processing Library materials (such as newspapers, magazines, Value Line…) to make them accessible to the public
  • Receiving and collecting fines and fees from patrons
  • Providing Notary Service
  • Documenting service statistics

Staffs the Circulation Desk

  • Receiving and checking out various library materials to library patrons
  • Responding to questions from patrons (in person, by phone, electronic…) regarding the physical location of resources, resource requests and other routine information inquiries
  • Registering new patrons, updating patron cards and sending patron faxes
  • Receiving and collecting fines from patrons on overdue and lost library resources
  • Restocking shelves with new inventories of books, videos and other resources
  • Receiving and collecting fines from patrons on overdue library resources (including Claims Returned and Payment Plan procedures)
  • Maintaining holds shelf
  • Conducting routine clerical activities as requested by library staff

Contributes to making the Great Falls Public Library environment welcoming and inviting place

  • Shelving and shifting Library materials as needed
  • Ensuring that Library public spaces are organized and stocked appropriately
  • Making displays
  • Enforcing Great Falls Public Library policies (including behavior policies, computer use policies and materials policies)
  • Participating in the promotion and delivery of Library programs

Supports the development of the Great Falls Public Library Collection

  • Creating reports and informational materials (such as book reviews, displays and book suggestion lists) as requested
  • Reviewing Collection Development resources and making suggestions as appropriate
  • Under the direction of the Collection Development Librarian, weeding and discarding Library materials
  • Repairing Library materials (either doing repairs or routing materials correctly)
  • Participates in the professional development of self and others. Participates in committees and professional organizations as appropriate

Job Qualifications

  • Combination of education and experience equivalent to a high school diploma and two years of college-level coursework in library science or a related field
  • Two years of experience within a library setting
  • Working knowledge of the principles and practices of library operations
  • Working knowledge of existing standard reference and bibliographical resources
  • Ability to establish positive working relationships with co-workers, supervisors and the general public
  • Knowledge of the library’s policies, procedures and practices
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing
  • Maintains files in orderly and efficient manner
  • Deals tactfully, respectfully and effectively with patrons and staff
  • Compiles requested materials, lists, statistics and related information quickly and accurately
  • Effectively promotes enthusiasm for library services
  • Establishes and maintains effective working relationships with fellow employees , supervisor, patrons and the public
