Under the direction of the Library Director or designee, the Information Specialist will perform a wide variety of high-level duties for the library. Must have a working knowledge of current technology and understand specific library technology. The  Information Specialist resolves routine operational problems and provides first-level troubleshooting for library systems and/or technology.  Builds and maintains local infrastructure and backups. Coordinates with City IT Department to ensure the smooth operation of the library networks. Communicates and coordinates with technology vendors. Recommends new technology. Maintains the technology inventory.  This position rotates as a member of the person-in-charge (PIC) team; providing library supervision and is expected to know all library operating procedures and policies.  Works closely with patrons and staff to resolve technical problems. Participates in outreach activities and supports library programs. Employees at this level receive only occasional instruction or assistance as new or unusual situations arise.

Job Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Four (4) years of experience managing an Integrated Library System (ILS) –OR– Four (4) years of experience working as a systems administrator
  • OR– Four (4) years of experience managing a computer lab
  • OR– a Bachelors Degree in Computer Science
  • OR– any equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered in order to meet the requirements listed above.
  • Must have Two (2) years of experience working with open-source software. including operating systems and software packages.
  • Valid Driver’s License and must meet City’s insurance requirements.
  • Four (4) years experience working in a public library. (preferred)
  • Ability to compile and debug open-source software applications. (preferred)
  • Must pass a background check

Job Responsibilities

  • Manage all library systems and information technologies used by the staff and the public.
  • Respond timely to IT requests, troubleshoot all technology issues (which may include submitting support tickets to City IT and vendors), install and remove applications and maintain changelog.
  • Administration of the library’s Integrated Library Systems (ILS) and associated bibliographic utilities.
  • Manage and maintain the library’s sound and projection systems
  • Order, monitor, and receive technology items for the library.
  • Maintain an appropriate filing system for technology-related documentation.
  • Perform monthly computer maintenance and updates.
  • Verify daily staff computer backups and troubleshoot as needed.
  • Maintain and update inventory of technology assets.
  • Compile surplus inventory, complete appropriate forms, and transfer to City Fixed Asset Management Specialist.
  • Troubleshooting and maintenance of photocopy machines
  • Help maintain library website and social media as assigned.
  • Pursue professional developments through seminars, conferences, workshops, journals, and professional publications to stay current with advances in library information technology and services.
  • Manage library as designated in-charge staff as needed.
  • Acknowledge complaints and problems and resolve them within areas of authority.
  • Assist public services staff with duties when necessary, including circulation of materials, maintaining and managing membership accounts, and reference service.
  • Serve as a role model for exemplary proactive customer service.
  • Assist Technology Trainer with public technology questions.
  • Assist in planning, organizing, promoting, and implementing library programs, classes, and activities.
  • Complete daily financial tasks including opening and closing cash register procedures and daily deposit as needed.
  • Operate a variety of office equipment including a computer, telephone system, copy machine, facsimile machine, and other related equipment.
  • Perform other duties and responsibilities as required and assigned.
