The City of Santa Barbara is searching for a Digital Collections and Web Services Librarian to assist with three functions for the system: develop and maintain our databases and digital collections, manage and update the Library’s website, and teach digital literacy and technology related classes for adults, and contribute to the Library’s digital marketing presence via social media. This position will work with Librarians and Library Administration in order to assist in implementing a Collection Development plan for the Santa Barbara Public Library.

Job Responsibilities

  • Maintain the Library’s website in collaboration with the Library Services Manager and the Technology Supervisor.
  • Coordinate workflows, set guidelines and ensure that the libraries’ web presence is accurate, up-to-date, user-centered and accessible.
  • Explore, recommend and adopt standard and emerging tools, techniques, methods and applications to deliver a robust and reliable online experience for all library users.
  • Supporting staff and patrons in using digital services and digital devices, including by developing and delivering training.
  • Manage the Library’s digital database and online learning platforms including the acquisition, maintenance, and related instructional classes for patrons.
  • Cultivate, enhance, and maintain relevant community contacts.
  • Prepare statistical reports as required, specifically in regards to database and online learning tools usage.
  • Planning and implementation of adult-focused programs and outreach, especially as related to digital literacy and emerging technologies.
  • Creating a sustainable growth strategy for assigned programs and services that ensures high quality, appeals to the Library’s diverse community, and helps attract new customers.
  • Implementing effective data collection methods to assess measurable outcomes and impacts of programs and services.
  • Collaborating with all other Librarians to develop programming, services and responsible collections for all ages.
  • Performs specialized professional library work which may include: sophisticated reference work, committee work, general customer assistance and instruction using electronic resources, the internet and print resources, creating print and digital marketing materials, managing social media, and conducting trainings for library users.
  • Management of budget allotment, supervision, training and evaluation of staff and/or volunteers.
  • Keeping current with marketing trends, emerging technology, and issues in the library profession.
  • Fund development.
  • Development of specialized collections and databases such as business, local history, children’s, teens, or other subject areas by researching new materials and evaluating collection/community needs and interest.

Job Qualifications

  • For the Librarian I position, some professional library experience is highly desirable.
  • For the Librarian II position, two years of increasingly responsible professional and technical library experience.
  • Equivalent to a Master’s degree from an accredited college or university with major course work in library science or a related field.
  • The ability to speak Spanish is highly desirable.
  • Policies, procedures and functions of a library.
  • Basic accounting procedures and techniques.
  • Public relations techniques.
  • Modern office procedures, methods and computer equipment.
  • Principles and procedures of complex professional and technical library work including methods, practices and techniques of library classification, cataloging and referencing.
  • Computerized cataloging, bibliographical, acquisition and circulation system databases and maintenance.
  • Modern web design standards, and web content management systems
  • Policies, procedures and functions of a library.
  • Accounting procedures and techniques.
  • Learn to operate computerized cataloging, bibliographical, acquisition and circulation data systems.
  • Learn to operate the City’s Content Management System for website maintenance.
  • Assist library patrons in response to basic reference, readers’ advisory, and directional library questions.
  • Understand and follow oral and written instructions.
  • Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.
  • Maintain physical condition appropriate to the performance of assigned duties and responsibilities which may include the following: Sitting or standing for extended periods of time, operating assigned equipment
  • Maintain effective audio-visual discrimination and perception needed for, making observations, communicating with others, reading and writing, operating assigned equipment
  • Perform professional and technical library tasks.
  • Verify bibliographic data and identify, input and/or correct diacrytics and special characters.
  • Assist library patrons in response to complex reference, readers’ advisory, and directional library questions.
  • Operate computerized cataloging, bibliographical, acquisition and circulation data systems.
  • Work independently in the absence of supervision.
  • Understand and follow oral and written instructions.
  • Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.
