This position reports to the University Archivist and Digital Repository Manager. The Processing and Outreach Archivist (POA) is responsible for organizing, preserving, and publicizing University Archives resources. With guidance from the University Archivist, the person in this position is responsible for processing and preserving materials, as well as for recommending policy. The POA assists with Archives and Special Collections reference, creation of exhibits, and outreach. May assist with supervising student employees and interns. As part of the Calvin T. Ryan Library faculty, assists with user services. This is a 12-month, tenure-track faculty position.

Job Duties

  • Processes archival and manuscript collections for discovery; creates and updates archival and manuscript research guides and finding aids.
  • Evaluates collection materials for preservation and/or conservation needs; if training permits, conducts basic preservation and/or conservation tasks.
  • Works with the University Archivist to manage archival workflow and processing priorities.
  • Assists with outreach and promotion efforts, particularly exhibits.
  • Supports collection access for both the UNK and broader community.
  • In collaboration with the University Archivist, recommends, updates, implements, and assesses archival policies and procedures.
  • May assist with supervision of Archives Student Workers and interns as relevant to other job duties.
  • Participates actively in the archives and library professions.
  • Represents the Library and Archives on appropriate University of Nebraska Consortium of Libraries committees.
  • Fulfills other duties as assigned by the University Archivist or Library Dean.
  • Provides research assistance and instruction to individuals in the use of the library’s services and resources in person and via LibAnswers (telephone, e-mail, SMS text and online chat). May include assigned evening and weekend reference duties. Maintains a high level of commitment to prompt, courteous service to all library clients.
  • Serves as a liaison to academic departments as assigned. Develops and maintains resource guides to support liaison duties through the use of LibGuides. Produces guides to support individual courses in assigned liaison areas at the request of and/or in collaboration with course instructors.
  • Engages in scholarly and service activity as required for tenure and promotion.
  • Assists in information literacy instruction utilizing various methods, including teaching sessions in the library computer labs and classrooms, instructional classrooms, other locations, and via Zoom. May include using course management software (Canvas), and LibCal scheduling software as appropriate.
  • Fulfills other tasks as assigned by the Dean of the Library.

Job Qualifications

Required: ALA-accredited Master’s degree with an archives specialization or equivalent. Experience processing archival / special collections materials, either professionally or as part of an internship, practicum or other similar experience. Experience planning exhibits and/or engaging in outreach. Evidence of effective project planning, management, and completion. Excellent written and oral communication skills. Commitment to achieving tenure under Board of Regents, University and Library guidelines and standards.

Preferred: Demonstrated expertise in processing archival / special collections materials. Demonstrated commitment to user-focused services and collections. Demonstrated ability to plan, prioritize, coordinate, and implement projects, independently and with teams. Experience engaging diverse communities. Experience conducting reference interviews and providing archives & special collections reference. Experience with relevant technology platforms associated with special and archival collections (e.g., ArchivesSpace, ArchiveIt, Omeka). Experience using metadata standards such as Dublin Core, EAD, METS, MODS, PREMIS, or DACS. Education and/or experience with rare books. Knowledge of current and emerging trends, issues, workflows, and best practices associated with archives. Experience supervising student employees or interns.
