THE UNIVERSITY LIBRARIES: The University Libraries are committed to educational equity and academic success that we support through comprehensive outreach, liaison, and information literacy programs at two campuses and online. Faculty librarians teach, consult with, and mentor highly diverse, undergraduate and graduate students in all areas of study across the University. Our active instruction and liaison programs reach approximately 3,000 students per year, and offer 80 public service hours per week. The Libraries have approximately 14 full-time equivalent faculty members, and 17 paraprofessionals. The collection includes over 600,000 volumes and approximately 85,000 online resources. Participation in the CSU system and regional consortia enhances these resources. The annual library budget is approximately $5 million.
DUTIES OF THE POSITION: Working collegially with the Library Faculty, the Equity and Open Access Librarian will create new opportunities for the Libraries to: engage with diverse learner communities, especially first generation, transfer, and commuter students, and design equity-informed library programming and services to meet their needs; coordinate with the outreach librarian and the scholarly communications librarian to improve campus awareness of critical open education/access issues; support faculty awareness, discovery, and use of open textbooks and open education resources to enhance student access to affordable materials; coordinate with the assessment librarian to design effective assessment strategies of the Libraries’ equity and open access initiatives; keep current with trends and developments in equity-oriented and non-traditional student services; and, serve as a liaison for open education initiatives at a local institutional level and at a CSU system-wide level.
The appointee to this position will participate in the full range of faculty responsibilities, including: teaching credit courses and other instructional sessions in the Libraries’ information literacy program; providing instructionally-focused reference services in person and online to undergraduates, graduate students, faculty, staff, and community members of the University during day, evening, and weekend hours; serving as a subject specialist and liaison to disciplinary departments; and, participating in faculty governance. Librarians may be scheduled to teach, provide reference, outreach and other services on days, nights and weekends on the Hayward and Concord campuses as well as other sites including the Oakland Center. Librarians enjoy faculty rank and privileges and are expected to participate in the full range of Library faculty responsibilities and activities, including governance and scholarship, expected of a member of tenure-track faculty. Please note that teaching assignments at California State University, East Bay include courses at the Hayward, Concord and Online campuses. In addition to teaching, all faculty have advising responsibilities, assist the department with administrative and/or committee work, and are expected to assume campus-wide committee responsibilities.
RANK AND SALARY: Rank and salary are determined by experience. Subject to budgetary authorization.

- MLS degree from an ALA-accredited institution or equivalent by start date;
- demonstrated experience working or collaborating with historically underrepresented persons and communities;
- demonstrated interest or experience in open education or open access issues;
- demonstrated ability to work collaboratively;
- demonstrated interest or experience in serving a highly diverse, urban population.
- Interest or experience in advocating for student access and success;
- awareness of issues related to accessibility of resources and services;
- interest or experience with equity issues in education; well-developed analytical, organizational, and communication skills (oral, written, and interpersonal);
- interest or experience in research or scholarship.
