On March 21, 2022, eligible library employees voted in favor of unionization and representation by the California Federation of Teachers (CFT).  TCCS and the Union will soon begin the process of negotiating toward a collective bargaining agreement. This position is included in the library employee bargaining unit and therefore is represented by CFT.  If selected for this position, the employee will be bound by any collective bargaining agreement that is reached between CFT and TCCS, and may be responsible for paying applicable union dues.

This is an opportunity for an early career librarian (i.e., 0-5 years of library experience). The Social Sciences Librarian supports 5-6 Social Science subject areas taught across The Claremont Colleges. Subject assignments will be based on the successful candidate’s experience, background, and interests as well as the needs of the organization. Subject Librarians teach discipline-specific information literacy sessions (including digital and scholarly communication literacies); conduct strategic and targeted departmental outreach aimed at integrating information literacy into the curricula; provide research consultations, both online and in-person; and select materials for the general collection in their subject areas.

Essential Functions

  • Gains a deep understanding of assigned Social Science programs and classes taught at The Claremont Colleges.
  • Conducts targeted and strategic outreach in order to fully integrate scaffolded information literacy concepts and skills across Social Science curricula.
  • Develops collaborative relationships with Library staff, faculty, and students to support research, teaching, and learning at The Claremont Colleges.
  • Continuously works to improve teaching abilities by assessing student learning during instruction sessions, participating in professional development, and participating in the library’s teaching observation program.
  • Collaboratively and strategically integrates digital and scholarly communication literacies into information literacy instruction sessions.
  • Becomes familiar with the discipline-specific data resources, practices (such as dataset discovery, data cleaning, and data curation), and repositories to support Social Science researchers.
  • Develops and maintains online guides and digital learning objects to support courses and disciplinary research.
  • Provides online and in-person research support to students and faculty in Social Science fields, and general research support as needed (both online and in-person).
  • Develops online, print, and multi-format collections that reflect the short-term and long-term research, teaching, and learning needs of The Claremont Colleges’ Social Science communities.
  • Contributes, as needed, to teaching interdisciplinary instruction for our well-established first-year information literacy program.
  • Participates in library-wide planning and assessment projects through service on committees, task forces, and special projects.
  • Actively engages in networking and professional development through national/regional/local organizations through committee work, office-holding, presentations, and publications.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications


MLIS from an ALA accredited program at the time of appointment or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Preferred Qualifications

  • An undergraduate or graduate degree in a Social Science discipline.
  • Experience supporting Social Science subject(s) in an academic library.
  • Familiarity with the evolving nature of scholarly communications in Social Science disciplines.
