The Simbonis Fellowship is a two-year term appointment from the date of hire. Anticipated start date 7/1/2021. The position is made possible by the Stanley Simbonis Fund. Selected candidate may begin work remotely but will be expected to work primarily on-site once the majority of library staff are working from the library.

The Simbonis Librarian serves the Yale School of Public Health (YSPH) and the broader Medical Campus through reference, instruction and outreach activities that support the research, teaching, clinical and service missions of Yale University. Working closely with the Research and Education Librarian for Public Health, this user-centered individual will teach students, faculty, clinicians, and researchers to leverage information and data resources, conduct evidence-based searching and synthesis, and utilize content management tools. The librarian will teach in the medical library’s general instruction program and offer reference services to the general clientele of the medical center. The librarian will collaborate with the Collection Development and Scholarly Communication Librarian to support staff and patrons on questions of open access, alternative publishing models, authors’ rights, and other issues related to scholarly information. The librarian will be a member of the Academic Research and Education team, and report to the Head of that unit, while working collaboratively across the Library.

Recent or projected MLIS and MPH graduates are encouraged to apply. You must have your degree completed by the time you begin work. The fellowship allows the selected candidate the unique opportunity to work with several program areas, collaborate on projects, and to participate in a challenging and rewarding work environment. A flexible program will be developed to balance the candidate’s individual goals and interests with the Library’s needs. In addition, the librarian’s professional interests will be supported with a mentoring program, professional development opportunities, and participation on library committees.

Job Responsibilities

  • Provides in-depth reference, information, bibliographic, research, and consultation services for students and researchers throughout the research life cycle, particularly at the Yale School of Public Health.
  • Collaborates with colleagues on the Academic Research and Education Team who support students at all levels throughout the Medical Center, including the Yale Schools of Public Health, Nursing and Medicine.
  • Participates in the medical library’s general education program and course-integrated instruction and prepares and presents a range of classes on various topics, including biomedical databases and platforms, open access and other scholarly publication trends, citation management tools, biomedical research strategies, enhancing research impact, and citation analysis. Classes may be held in the library or other campus locations and/or online.
  • Works closely with the Collection Development and Scholarly Communication Librarian on projects related to scholarly communication and library collections. Helps promote collections to diverse user groups and advocates for diverse information sources.
  • Understands and keeps current with issues and trends related to scholarly communication, publishing, and emerging information and data sharing, particularly in the public health and health equity fields and considers how these trends may apply to work at Yale.
  • Becomes knowledgeable about public access policies that affect grant-funded research; understands and can assist authors with the article deposit process in compliance with public access policies.
  • Creates and maintains online guides and other research support tools for public health, health equity, and scholarly communication information.
  • Participates in departmental, library, and system-wide planning, and engages in campus, regional and national professional organizations and collaborative activities.
  • May serve as a project manager for a variety of short-term and long-term projects.
  • Serves on departmental and library system-wide committees.
  • Demonstrates professional development and service through publication and/or active membership in professional organizations.
  • May be required to assist in disaster recovery efforts.
  • May perform other duties as assigned.

Job Qualifications

  • Master’s degree from an ALA‐accredited library school. In selected instances, a graduate degree in a related discipline, such as an MPH, may be substituted for a master’s degree in library science.
  • Experience working collegially, collaboratively and independently with varied groups with and across a complex organization, and a rapidly changing team environment
  • Excellent interpersonal, analytical and communications skills, including the ability to actively listen, understand and articulate user needs.
    Commitment to providing excellent customer service standards and a passion for teaching.
  • Demonstrated ability to prioritize, multi-task and meet deadlines, and to conceptualize and conceive new solutions to problems with creativity and flexibility.
  • Ability to work both independently or collaboratively in a team environment, and to effectively build partnerships and promote the benefits of change in an academic culture that often values ambiguity, diversity of opinion and historic precedent.
  • Ability to design and implement effective programs, projects and services, and bring them to fruition or conclusion in a timely manner to achieve library objectives.
  • Preferred: Experience in a health science library or transferable experience with information retrieval and management, understanding of scholarly communication issues, and experience in using information literacy to increase health equity.
