Performs professional librarian duties in a medical library of a County hospital.
Positions allocable to this class report to a Senior Medical Librarian and have primary responsibility for performing professional staff librarian duties such as cataloguing and classifying books, medical reference work, and the evaluation includes the assignment of part-time in-charge responsibility for a small medical library. The incumbents must exercise a knowledge of cataloguing and classification principles, the evaluation and selection of books and other library material, and library reference services.
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES
Catalogues and classifies medical books and other medical library collection materials.
Schedules library personnel to staff reference desk.
Conducts computerized searches utilizing databases such as Med-Line, Dialog, and Orbit to compile bibliographies on specific medical and scientific subject areas.
Answers reference questions and provides assistance to medical, students in the use of the library and in locating reference materials.
Evaluates new medical books, journals, and other collection material to assess their suitability for the collection by reading their reviews and checking the NLM catalogue proof sheets and makes recommendations regarding their selection for purchase.
Has responsibility for the document delivery service between a County hospital medical library and other libraries, including giving instructions to para-professional or clerical personnel, formulating circulation policies, and resolving delivery problems that occur.
TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE
A Master’s Degree in Library Science from an accredited college – AND – One year’s professional librarian experience in a medical library or graduate courses in at least two of the following areas: medical bibliography, medical library administration, or special library services.
