A regular, full time, 12-month professional position responsible for providing leadership and development of the library’s instruction and liaison support for STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) departments. Responsibilities include providing information literacy instruction, reference, collection development, and research support for STEM subject areas. In addition, coordinates and develops the library’s assessment and research support activities across functional areas. Occasional evening and weekend hours required. This position reports to the Library Director.

Job Responsibilities

Liaises with STEM departments to provide for their specific instructional, informational, research and library support needs.

  • Works collaboratively with STEM faculty to develop innovative and effective approaches to strengthening undergraduate information literacy skills and to build collections that support teaching, learning and research.
  • Establishes and maintains regular and frequent contact with the academic units assigned; develops relationships with faculty and in-depth knowledge of the entire science curriculum to inform decision making.
  • Creates online and print tools to support student learning and effective use of resources.
  • Conducts information sessions for STEM faculty, College staff, and administrative officials related to research support resources and services that are available from the library.
  • Works closely with faculty in designated academic departments, coordinating and facilitating the selection of library materials appropriate to the curriculum and the library’s collection development policy

Coordinates and develops the library’s assessment activities across functional areas:

  • Develops and maintains a statistical repository and dashboard for the Hoover Library.
  • In coordination with the Director, Hoover Library, compiles statistical reports for the library, including (but not limited to) the annual ACRL/IPEDs report. Contributes to the development and production of the library’s annual report and other reports to College officials.
  • In coordination with appropriate library staff, compiles and maintains statistics for library functions, including public services (e.g. circulation, gate count, and reference), instruction (e.g. classes taught and students reached), outreach (e.g. social media reach, attendance at library programs, website reach), technical services (e.g. database and journal usage), and archives (e.g. materials used, student and faculty contacts).
  • With the appropriate library staff, coordinates the interpretation and application of assessment data to support the library’s strategic goals.
  • Develops and implements assessment policies and procedures for library collections.

Provides reference services to the college community and general public.

  • Assists users in conducting research, finding information and using the library’s resources.
  • Is a part of the on-call reference rotation.

Provides instruction on the use and interpretation of information resources.

  • Prepares and delivers class presentations and demonstrations.
  • Develops instructional material and prepares subject and resource guides in various formats.
  • Maintains current skills with library instruction techniques and technologies.

Participates in professional organizations and takes part in college academic activities

  • Participates in relevant professional organizations.
  • Attends professional meetings, workshops and presentations.
  • Participates in college academic activities.

Participates as a member of the library staff in order to advance the mission and goals of the Hoover Library.

  • Serves on library committees and participates in annual planning.
  • Cross-trains as needed to provide backup support (e.g. basic circulation training).

Information Security Role: Data Steward

  • Develop and maintain data classification procedures.
  • Develop, implement, and manage data access procedures.
  • Ensure that data quality and data definition standards are developed and implemented.
  • Interpret and assure compliance with Federal, State and College policies and regulations regarding the release of, responsible use of, and access to institutional data.
  • Coordinate and resolve stewardship issues and data definitions of data elements that cross multiple functional units.
  • Develop, implement, and maintain a Business Continuity Plan for institutional data under their control.
  • Provide communications and education to data users on appropriate use and protection of institutional data.
  • Develop, implement, and communicate record retention requirements to the College community.
  • Review and approve Restricted data usage and use requests.
  • Ensure that individuals with visibility to Restricted data have completed required training and have agreed to confidentiality statements.
  • Perform periodic reviews to ensure continued compliance with this policy.


  • ALA-accredited Master’s Degree in Library or Information Science.
  • Undergraduate or advanced degree in a STEM field.
  • 3-5 years’ experience in an academic library setting.
  • Demonstrated interest in and aptitude for interdisciplinary STEM librarianship and for working with undergraduate STEM majors and non-majors.
  • Experience using and teaching STEM resources to majors and non-majors.
  • Familiarity with the information research methods of scientists.
  • Knowledge of scholarly communication practices in STEM fields.
  • Experience developing and delivering curriculum integrated information literacy instruction at the undergraduate college level.
  • Reference experience and a strong commitment to service excellence in all forms.
  • Ability to work in a strongly collaborative environment and fit into the cross-functional nature and close-knit community at a small liberal arts college.
  • Excellent interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with demonstrated ability to provide well-reasoned analysis using appropriate research and data resources; developing reports to support conclusions; aptitude for detailed work. Ability to successfully lead and complete a wide scope of projects, prioritizing simultaneous tasks as is appropriate.
  • Familiarity with statistical methods and the analysis and interpretation of statistical data.
  • Demonstrated commitment to the use of new information technologies. Commitment to professional development and service.
