Northern Arizona University
Northern Arizona University’s Cline Library seeks an experienced librarian to bring leadership, expertise, and vision to its Content, Discovery and Delivery Services (CDDS) unit, from oversight of daily operations to planning for the future. CDDS provides core and high-profile library resources and services including: cataloging and metadata; collections management; document delivery; electronic resources; electronic reserves (including related course content and affordability initiatives); and the OpenKnowledge@NAU institutional repository. The unit head is responsible for overseeing and maximizing the library’s use of Ex Libris Alma and Primo and for providing data- and assessment-informed stewardship of the library’s acquisitions budget and its collections.
The successful candidate will actively collaborate with colleagues across areas of expertise and department lines, the NAU community, consortia partners, donors, funding agencies, and others to ensure that the resources and services CDDS provides are responsive to the needs of a diverse user community in Flagstaff and at a distance, align with the strategic directions of the library and the university, and promote excellence in the user experience. They will be expected to forge effective partnerships that help the unit and library increase awareness of resources and services and address challenges in a changing information environment. This position is responsible for enhancing and supporting the job performance, professional growth, and career progression of the unit’s talent. This person reports to the Dean and University Librarian and serves on the Library Leadership Council.
This is a twelve-month continuing status (equivalent to tenure) or continuing status eligible (equivalent to tenure track) academic professional position at the Associate Librarian or Librarian rank. Appointed rank commensure with experience and qualifications. Retention and promotion are earned through achievement of a record of excellence in position effectiveness, scholarship, and service. - Lead all facets of department life from daily operations to strategic planning including project management, goal and objective setting, unit policy development, and monitoring trends in acquistions, electronic resources, and scholarly communications.
- Use evidence-based decision-making and change management principles both independently and in collaboration with others to evaluate, improve, expand, or discontinue resources and services in order to align budgeting and spending with library and university strategic priorities.
- Collaborate with Cline Library colleagues, the NAU community, Arizona public university and community college partners, and other library and cultural organizations to define issues, solve problems, improve outcomes, and pursue collaborative opportunities.
- Collaborate with colleagues across the library to ensure that collections and departmental services meet user needs and provide an excellent user experience.
- Identify and establish data measures, methods, and reporting that allow the unit to inform stakeholders of the value of resources and services it provides and ensure systems and services are future focused. Communicate unit information to internal and external audiences.
- Actively participate on the Library Leadership Council, participating in assessment, strategic and financial planning, policy development, and library-wide decision-making.
- Foster a work environment in which innovation, communication, and teamwork are valued. Set clear goals, achievable objectives, and clear performance measures for staff, and coach staff positively to encourage professional growth. Relate staff development to library and university priorities.
- Support the continued development of the library’s research support services, including the OpenKnowledge@NAU institutional repository, data management services, and open educational resources.
- Collaboratively develop and provide shared leadership for a cross-departmental digital production and initiatives unit with staff from Special Collections and Archives (SCA) and CDDS.
- Represent the Library on University committees and advocate for library initiatives as they relate to broader campus initiatives.
- Continue to engage in librarianship and to develop a record of high-quality scholarship and appropriate professional service.
- ALA-accredited graduate degree from a library and information science program or an advanced degree in a related field.
- Three or more years of post-degree experience in content, discovery, and delivery services as related to the position responsibilities.
- Two or more years of successful supervisory experience including goal setting, performance management and formal evaluation.

First three minimum qualifications listed above, plus: Six years or more of effective, successful experience as a librarian in an academic library or similar setting AND a sustained record of scholarly and/or creative activities and service commensurate with appointment at the level of Associate Librarian. An Associate Librarian’s salary is between $81,000 and $87,000.

First three minimum qualifications listed above, plus: Twelve years or more of effective, successful experience as a librarian in an academic library or similar setting AND a sustained record of scholarly and/or creative activities and service commensurate with appointment at the level of Librarian. A Librarian’s salary is between $88,000 – $94,000.
- Extensive knowledge of academic library technical services, from best practices to current trends.
- Significant experience in collection development and management of scholarly information resources.
- Significant experience with library systems and functionalities including Ex Libris Alma and Primo.
- Experience with content management systems, digitization, and metadata.
- Experience successfully allocating resources and managing budgets.
- Evidence of a strong commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion.
- Strong interpersonal and public communication skills. Ability to serve as a library spokesperson and advocate.
- Ability to facilitate effective, diplomatic communication among diverse stakeholders in person and remotely.
- Evidence of working creatively, collaboratively, and effectively in a leadership role that promotes teamwork, diversity, equity, and inclusion.
- Record of successful leadership in progressively responsible positions managing full-time staff, including hiring, evaluating, coaching, and skill development at the individual and unit levels.
- Experience managing, interpreting, and communicating quantitative and qualitative data for decision-making, continuous improvement, and annual reporting.
- Experience planning, implementing, managing, evaluating, and improving the daily and ongoing operations of a program or service.
- Ability to lead innovation in a rapidly-changing environment while aligning resources with organizational priorities.
- Ability to set priorities, exercise flexibility in meeting objectives, and manage multiple projects and assignments.
- Knowledge of copyright, intellectual property, licensing, and scholarly communication issues.
- Knowledge of current trends and issues in academic libraries, higher education, scholarly communications, and relevant areas of interest.
