Illinois State University’s Milner Library is seeking a non-tenure-track Fine Arts Librarian. Reporting to the Head of the Arts and Humanities Subject Group in the Public Services unit, the Fine Arts Librarian will serve as subject librarian to the Wonsook Kim College of Fine Arts, specifically the Wonsook Kim School of Art, School of Theatre and Dance, Arts Technology Program, and University Galleries.


This work includes the following duties and responsibilities in assigned subject areas:

  • act as the primary contact to the library for administrators, faculty, students, and staff;
  • proactively communicate about library matters, resources, services, etc.;
  • cultivate a relationship with the chairs, directors, and/or faculty library liaisons;
  • oversee all aspects of collection development and maintenance, including purchases, de-accessioning, and budgetary management;
  • plan, develop, conduct, teach, and assess library instruction sessions; develop and maintain LibGuides and handouts;
  • provide general and in-depth reference service at reference desk(s); provide in-depth reference by appointment, drop-in, and in the stacks as well as through e-mail and chat;
  • participate in evening/weekend reference desk rotation;
  • assist library colleagues with making connections within the various liaison departments for integrating scholarly communication initiatives and teaching with primary sources from Special Collections and University Archives.

    Salary and Benefits: This is a 12-month position. Salary commensurate with qualifications and experience. 24 vacation days and 11 paid holidays per year.

-Advanced degree in Library and Information Science or equivalent from an American Library Association-accredited library program or from a program recognized by the ALA as an international equivalent

-Excellent interpersonal, written, and oral communication skills
-Ability to manage diverse assignments in a rapidly changing organization
-If this position is Security Sensitive or if you are subject to a criminal background investigation based on University policy, employment is contingent upon you passing a satisfactory criminal background investigation. You may not begin work until the criminal background investigation results have been received and cleared by Human Resources.

Desired Qualifications:

-Experience as a subject librarian in fine and/or performing arts disciplines
-Degree(s) in fine and/or performing arts disciplines
-Completion of advanced degree(s) in fine and/or performing arts disciplines
-Coursework or experience in fine and/or performing art disciplines

Necessary Licenses/Certifications/Degrees

-Advanced degree in Library and Information Science or equivalent from an American Library Association-accredited library program or from a program recognized by the ALA as an international equivalent

Hiring Rate/Range : Salary is commensurate with experience and qualifications.
