Taxonomist/Digital Asset Specialist, Facebook

We’re looking for ​an experienced Taxonomist/Digital Asset Specialist who is willing to dive in and support the implementation of our enterprise DAM initiative. This role will sit within the UX Research Technology team which is responsible for supporting the entire Research org at Facebook. This person will focus on the strategic planning, design, and implementation of taxonomies to help achieve goals for the Interests & Communities Taxonomy team, such as supporting the categorizing and labeling, machine learning and content understanding systems at Facebook & Instagram. The crux of this work is in developing, maintaining, growing a taxonomy for a number of complex, many-faceted products while integrating it into our broader taxonomy/ontology infrastructure. The work also includes following taxonomy management best practices, metadata and vocabulary standards, and building cross-functional relationships. This role will be focused on extending our Taxonomy to work with Instagram content and will be an amazing opportunity to help users find interest based content in a dynamic and rich content set. The person in this role will be expected to be an experienced taxonomist able to quickly expand knowledge domains.

Job Responsibilities

Information Management 55%:

  • Research and incorporate industry best practices and innovation into our information architecture (IA) and taxonomy practice
  • Assist in developing, maintaining, and vetting subject-specific controlled vocabularies across the Research Org and the product teams they serve
  • Experiment with new and creative approaches to taxonomy maintenance within the current tool as well as make recommendations about ongoing taxonomy management
  • As needed, coordinate the accession, ingest, and application of metadata for research projects and supporting files into the digital repository using standard and customized schema
  • Work closely with the research librarian, team managers, leads, and/or team PMs to discuss direction and discovery of moving the digital content to the central digital asset management repository
  • A needed, provide outreach and DAM literacy support to non-librarians to ensure users are knowledgeable regarding search and discovery and ingestion of assets
  • Help coordinate and support team demo/training as well as provide 1:1 real-time support for researchers becoming familiar with the current data asset management system
  • Manage, create and update procedural documentation related to the centralized repository

System Administration 45%:

  • Evaluate new features and workflows within the digital asset management system
  • Pull reports and analytics from DAM system to demonstrate monthly team usage
  • Report bugs, workflow issues, and other technical issues while also providing feedback and enhancement recommendations
  • Run testing with predetermined user stories to test DAM workflow compliance and inform actionable improvements

Job Qualifications


  • 3+ years of experience in digital asset management and metadata application
  • Experience building taxonomies, terminology databases, and thesauri
  • Experience understanding user needs, gathering requirements and crafting solutions
  • Track record of building cross-functional relationships
  • Have the ability to operate independently, being detail-oriented, and delivering results in a highly organized manner
  • Excellent communication skills used with a variety of audiences consisting of librarians, research managers, researchers and other cross-functional teams
  • A portfolio or other work samples showing your taxonomy work


  • Library and Information Science MA Degree
  • Experience working with research-related content and repositories
  • Experience in system data migration and mapping
  • Experience testing and reporting technical DAM related issues to product managers, users, and engineering teams
  • Experience using taxonomy management systems to maintain categories, attributes, and other metadata
  • Experience using Orange Logic’s Cortex DAM system
