The Gerth Archives and Special Collections Department at CSU Dominguez Hills is looking for a full-time Project Archivist/Cataloger to complete a cataloging and archival project related to recently accessioned early-to-mid 20th century Labor History Collection. Reporting to the Director, Archives and Special Collections, work will focus on the arrangement and description of archival materials, the cataloging of historic books, pamphlets and serials as well as some digitization work and the creation of metadata. Incumbent will supervise a project archives assistant, student assistants and interns and participate in other Gerth Archives projects and department work. Performs other duties as assigned. The project will consist of traditional archival re-housing, arrangement and description including the creation of finding aids for several small collections.

In addition, initial work will focus on cross-walking catalog data between library software programs, selected digitization work with the use of CONTENTdm, finding aid creation through the use of Archives Space and reference work relating to the collection. Incumbent will be asked to contribute articles, blog posts and content on other social media.

This collection consists of small archival collections, books, newspapers, periodicals, documents, digital materials, microfilm and audio/visual materials. The primary goal of the collection is to facilitate research and documentation of the 20th century labor movement.

This is a 24-month full-time position with benefits and the possibility of extending the position beyond the initial 24 months.

Employment at the Foundation is on an at-will basis and can be terminated by either an employee or the Foundation at any time with or without cause or advanced notice. Permanent status can neither be obtained nor granted.

Employment is with the California State University, Dominguez Hills Foundation. This is not a State of California position.

Salary and Benefits

Bachelors’ degree required. Masters’ degree in Library Science or Archival Administration or other related degree preferred. Two-years of experience in a library cataloging environment or archival setting. Demonstrated experience with archival best practices, standards and procedures for print and digital collections. Interest in cataloging printed materials and archival material. Interest in Labor history and/or 20th century radical movements. Strong oral and written communication skills.

Familiarity with Special Collections library cataloging. Familiarity with archival theory and techniques: appraisal, accessioning, arrangement and description. Familiarity with preservation practices, including digitization. Familiarity with office software applications especially Excel as well as archival cataloging software including CONTENTdm and Archives Space. Undergraduate or graduate specialization in history; Experience creating metadata (EAD, MARC, DC) using library and archival descriptive standards (RDA, DACS) and controlled vocabularies (LCSH, LCNAF, AAT); and familiarity with Library Services Platforms (such as Alma).

Ability to lift and move 40-pound containers.

The university offers 43 undergraduate majors and 19 master’s degree areas to nearly 15,000 students with about 1,100 teaching faculty. The CSUDH Library has nearly half a million volumes and e-books along with a host of scholarly databases. The Archives and Special Collections Department is charged with enhancing access to primary sources. The CSUDH Archives consists of nearly 3,000 linear feet of archival objects (1700s-2000s) as well as 200,000 photographs. The CSUDH Archives and the CSU System Archives (located at CSUDH) has about 240 finding aids in the Online Archives of California.

Cataloging and archival project related to a Labor History Collection;
