Loyola University Chicago (Loyola) seeks nominations and applications to identify user-focused, collaborative, and forward-thinking candidates for the position of Civic Engagement Librarian. This position will coordinate the Libraries participation in activities that recognize and support the civic dimension of university life; act as subject matter expert in government information and official publications; manage Loyola’s participation in the Federal Depository Library Program (FDLP); provide cross-disciplinary support for quantitative and qualitative scholarship in the social sciences; contribute to government grant-seeking activities; and serve as library liaison to selected academic departments and programs. This position also supports general research and learning needs of the university, including information literacy instruction for first year students, and participates in other library programming and information services.
This is a non-tenured Library faculty position with opportunities for promotion. The successful candidate will be based on either the Lake Shore or Water Tower Campuses, depending upon liaison assignment(s) though will have responsibilities on both campuses. Reporting to the Head of Research and Learning Services, the Civic Engagement Librarian will
- Collaborate with campus units supporting civic participation, service learning, and global engagement, and with neighborhood organizations, schools, and public libraries. Coordinate library programming with area high schools.
- Provide expert guidance in finding and utilizing the publications and information services of local, state, national, and foreign governments, as well as those of regional and international intergovernmental organizations.
- Serve as depository library coordinator, actively promoting the use of Federal government information resources and ensuring conformance with the legal and program requirements of the FDLP.
- Provide support for the analysis of quantitative and qualitative data in the social sciences, through consultations and instruction, including skills-building workshops for faculty, students, staff, and others.
- Work with the Loyola University Public Engagement (LUPE) initiative and other campus and community partners to offer programming and foster research, learning, and civil debate on contemporary political and social issues.
- Assist in identifying and pursuing external funding opportunities from state and federal agencies.
- Contribute to Research and Learning Department projects and initiatives, including creation of research guides and instructional materials, development of library discovery tools and platforms, and maintenance of the Reference Collection.
- Provide library and information literacy instruction for university programs including first year writing, honors program, and undergraduate research program.
- Participate in staffing information service desks and services, as needed.
- Take initiative and work both autonomously and collaboratively to meet strategic goals, while consistently promoting teamwork, respect, diversity, and inclusiveness.
- Take part in committee work and professional development.
- Actively contribute to the broader profession through scholarship and service.
As library liaison
- Serve as the main point of contact and coordinate collaborative efforts between the University Libraries and selected academic departments and programs to enhance Loyola’s teaching, research, and service missions.
- Work with faculty to develop course-integrated instruction and other curriculum-based information literacy initiatives that promote the effective and ethical use of information resources.
- Provide subject-specific research consultations and guidance on copyright and other scholarly communication issues.
- Collaborate with faculty and other stakeholders to identify and acquire scholarly resources to support the curricular and research needs of faculty, students, and staff.

- Master’s degree from an ALA-accredited library and information science program or in a relevant discipline or professional area
- Demonstrated problem solving, organizational, and analytical skills
- Familiarity with the Federal Depository Library Program and government information in all formats
- Effective interpersonal and communication skills
- Additional advanced degree in the social sciences
- Proficiency with quantitative analysis using statistical software such as SPSS, SAS, or Stata and/or programming languages such as R or Python
- Experience with qualitative and mixed methods research and QDA software such as NVivo or ATLAS.ti
- Familiarity with federal and other fundraising resources and grant writing
- Work experience providing library instruction, research support, and/or collection development services
- Background in outreach, promotion, and/or marketing
- History of engagement with community organizations
