The American Heritage Center (AHC) of the University of Wyoming is hiring for the Clara R. Toppan Curator of the Toppan Rare Books Library.  We are seeking an innovative, collaborative, and user-centered librarian/archivist.  The position offers the opportunity to work with the collections of a world-class rare book and manuscript repository, and to inspire broad and creative use of those collections among existing and as-yet untapped audiences. The successful candidate will also participate in, support, and develop plans for shaping the future of collection development in the rare books area specifically, in conjunction with broader AHC collecting goals.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

This position supports the academic mission of the University of Wyoming. The incumbent serves as the archives primary contact for rare book/information literacy instruction for the Reference Services unit. Develops course content, activities, and assessment, and works collaboratively with other archivists to teach research and information literacy skills to students to support UW’s general education curriculum. Works with teaching faculty to promote primary source literacy, and develop services and strategies to actively engage students; provides tours.  Also support day-to day operations of the reference service unit by responding to research and information requests, and working at least one half-day shift per week on the reading room desk.   Support rare book collection organization, and outreach.

The successful candidate will have the ability to work well under pressure, work well in a team-environment; demonstrate self-confidence, and professional creativity. As a faculty archivist, the candidate will be engaged in collection development, donor relations, public programs, research and/or creative activity, University and professional service. The candidate will supervise a full-time contract cataloger, part-time worker(s), and lead collection development efforts for rare books, in conjunction with broader AHC collecting goals. Additional duties as assigned based in individual knowledge, skills, and abilities. The position reports to the Manager Reference Services.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
  • MA, MLS, MLIS, or equivalent.
  • Experience teaching in an archival/special collections setting
  • Experience working with historical materials and with archives/library practices
  • Experience with reference duties
  • Experience engaging communities through archival collections
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal, problem solving, and organizational skills
  • Demonstrated evidence of service and scholarship consistent with the requirements of faculty archivists at the AHC
  • Five years related experience
  • Valid driver’s license with a motor vehicle record (MVR) that is compliant with the University Vehicle Use Policy.
DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Second Master’s or PhD preferred.
  • Experience providing tours, and providing archives reference services in a public repository
  • Evidence of a strong service orientation and demonstrated ability to work effectively with faculty, students, library colleagues, and the general public
  • Strong technology skills and an enthusiasm for adopting new technologies and systems that expand access to collections and facilitate their use in research and teaching
  • Ability to keep abreast of developments in special collections standards and trends, applying new rules, interpretations, and techniques as appropriate
  • Evidence of professional leadership and  commitment to active participation in regional and national organizations
  • Evidence of sustained research and scholarship, or creative activities, at the regional or national level
  • Evidence of continuing commitment to professional growth activities, active involvement in the leadership of professional or scholarly organizations at the regional or national level (e.g., service on committees and task forces, newsletter editorial board, elective office
