Austin, Texas, Archivist I or Archivist II – African American Community Archivist Austin Public Library – Austin History Center Austin, Texas 
Under limited supervision, this Archivist I or II provides public programming related to Austin’s African American Community ; provides reference services to the public; and processes archival collections related to the African American Community. Additional responsibilities are as follows: 

Develops and implements community engagement activities to engage and highlight Austin’s African American Community
Collaborates with other organizations to plan and implement programs related to African American history in Austin/Travis County
Coordinates and conducts training, tours, and public programs for the public and staff. Supervises volunteer tasks.
Provides archival reference and research services; serves as the subject specialist in African American history in Austin/Travis County.
Collaborates with other staff to compile finding aids, reference guides, articles, statistics, and reports
Leads or assists in planning exhibits by organizing and interpreting historical records for public presentation.
Identifies and facilitates the donation of archival materials documenting the heritage of African Americans in Austin and Travis County.
Represent the City of Austin and the Austin Public Library including lectures, media appearances, interviews.
Conducts oral histories documenting African American history in Austin/Travis County.

This position will be filled as an Archivist I or Archivist II based on experience.
DUTIES, FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES : Essential duties and functions, pursuant to the Americans with Disabilities Act, may include the following. Other related duties may be assigned.
Archivist I

Provides archival reference and research services
Organizes, processes and conserves archival and/or library collections
Compiles and creates finding aids and reference guides by organizing and describing records so that information is accessible
Assists public in using collections by explaining available resources and methods for locating information
Assists with curating and appraisals to determine function, authenticity and evidentiary value
Conducts meetings, training and public programs
Provides tours of the Austin History Center to public and staff
Assists in planning exhibits by organizing and interpreting historical records for public presentation
Collects, maintains and reports statistics

Archivist II

Appraises, organizes, processes, catalogs and conserves archival collections and materials.
Curates one or more of the collection units (Periodicals, Maps, Recordings, Photos, etc.) by making selection and acquisition decisions, processing and cataloging materials in that unit.
Compiles finding aids, reference guides, articles, statistics and reports
Provides archival reference and research services.
Assists with the acquisition and appraisal of collections by helping to determine whether the collection or acquisition is suitable for inclusion in the AHC collections; generally done under supervision of the AHC manager or a supervisor
Provides public liaison activities including lectures, media appearances and interviews.
Explains research policies and procedures, demonstrates research methods, explains the use of reference materials/equipment and explains fees to customers.
Coordinates and conducts meetings, training, tours, and public programs to the public and staff.
Assists in planning exhibits by organizing and interpreting historical records for public presentation.
May serve as the collections registrar by registering donations into the collection (this is an archives and museum function) and maintaining donor records] Serves as ‘in-charge’ staff person in management’s absence

Archivist I

Knowledge of archival standards, issues, practices, and trends.
Knowledge of conservation issues, practices, and trends.
Knowledge of reference tools and procedures.
Knowledge of records management issues and practices.
Knowledge of digital imaging issues and trends, especially in regards to archival practice.
Skill in using standards for archival description, cataloging, and networked resource sharing for archival objects and descriptions.
Skill in oral and written communication including presentation.
Skill in organizing and interpreting historical records for public presentation.
Skill in using computers and related software, including Microsoft Office products.
Skill in prioritizing work assignments.
Skill in establishing and maintaining effective relationships with employees and the public.
Ability to work with people of diverse backgrounds.

Archivist II

Knowledge of archival and Encoded Archival Description standards, issues, practices, and trends.
Knowledge of reference tools and procedures.
Knowledge of records management issues and practices.
Knowledge of digital imaging issues and trends, especially in regards to archival practice.
Knowledge of electronic records management and preservation.
Skill in processing/arranging archival collections.
Skill in oral and written communication including presentation.
Skill in organizing and interpreting historical records for public presentation.
Skill in using computers and related software, including Microsoft Office products.
Skill in prioritizing work assignments.
Skill in establishing and maintaining effective relationships with City employees and the public.
Ability to use and apply standards for archival description, cataloging, and networked resource sharing for archival objects and descriptions.
Ability to appraise records for archival and/or historical significance.
Ability to work with people of diverse backgrounds.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS :

Demonstrated knowledge of the history of the African American Community in Austin or Travis County.
Experience creating, planning, and implementing community events to engage the African American Community.
Experience appraising, organizing, processing, and conserving archival collections and materials.
Experience answering archival/historically-related reference questions from the public.
Experience conducting oral history interviews.
Coursework in African American, Ethnic Studies, or related field.
Ability to travel to more than one work location

Master’s degree in Library or Information Science, or related to the assigned program from an ALA accredited university, with specialization in archival enterprise and/or administration; or must be received within six (6) months of employment.
Master’s degree in History/Public History with coursework in archival administration, or a Master’s Degree in a related field, may substitute for the required Master’s degree in Library or Information Science.

Archivist II

Master’s degree in Library or Information Science, or related to the assigned program from an ALA accredited university, with specialization in archival enterprise and/or administration, plus two (2) years professional experience working in an archives, library, museum, or other cultural heritage institution
Master’s degree in History/Public History with coursework in archival administration, or a Master’s Degree in a related field, may substitute for the required Master’s degree in Library or Information Science.
