Position summary

Reporting to the Head, Content, Discovery, and Delivery Services, the Electronic Resources Librarian will lead the library’s electronic resources and serials team; acquire, license, manage, and support Cline Library’s collection of electronic resources; oversee management of a small collection of print serials; assess the value and impact of electronic collections; and work collaboratively with library staff, vendors, and campus IT staff to ensure convenient, seamless, and uninterrupted access to electronic resources. The Electronic Resources Librarian will also represent NAU in consortial projects with other Arizona universities.  If you are the successful candidate, you will join a recently-reorganized department that includes (in addition to electronic resources) acquisitions, cataloging and metadata, document delivery services, course reserves, library systems management, and physical processing.  Recent strategic planning with the university community has identified important new library goals that include an emphasis on affordable and accessible course content, the implementation of Ex Libris Leganto, an evaluation of collections management and budgeting, campus and online student success, and new programs that support and advance the university’s research excellence.

Responsibilities include:

·         Leadership and Management:

o   Lead a team of staff and student employees whose work supports current and future directions for the library’s electronic resources and serials management.   Manage individual and team performance and development.  Foster an environment that promotes accountability, high performance, staff engagement, and a shared sense of purpose as well as a spirit of cooperation and collaboration.

o   Serve on CDDS leadership team, including contributing to the shaping of departmental staffing and operations. Collaborate and communicate effectively with leadership team colleagues to provide outstanding and responsive services in support of library and university goals.

o   Develop, oversee, and document sustainable workflows and staffing models related to the entire lifecycle of electronic resources.

o   Oversee management of a small print serials collection, including selection, ordering, electronic invoicing, check-in, and maintenance of holdings records in Ex Libris Alma.


·         Electronic Resources and Serials Management:

o   Acquire, license, and activate electronic resources (e-journals, e-books, streaming media), working in collaboration with a variety of university departments and personnel. Enter and manage invoices in Alma for electronic resources and serials and track expenditures.

o   In partnership with university purchasing personnel, negotiate license agreements and contract renewals to optimize the use of library collection funds.

o   In partnership with university disability resources personnel, ensure that licensed products meet accessibility standards.

o   Lead and/or participate in inter-university and/or consortial projects related to electronic collections, including collaborative purchase of electronic resources, cooperative collection development, and shared collections.

o   Manage and support electronic resources throughout their life cycle, with a focus on access.  Investigate, troubleshoot, and correct holdings, access, and technical issues, collaborating with library and campus IT staff and vendors as needed. Provide timely, high-quality support to library staff and users.

o   Collaborate with collection management and cataloging staff to maintain accurate descriptive metadata, holdings, and vendor information in Alma.

·         Oversee assessment of the electronic resources and serials collections to ensure that collections and expenditures are aligned with university goals, academic programs, user needs, and budget limitations. Work with unit staff to collect, analyze, report, and make available data regarding usage of electronic resources to inform library decision-making.

·         Develop and maintain positive relationships and clear, open communication with library staff, users, vendors, and other stakeholders.

·         Keep abreast of developments in electronic resources and serials management, scholarly publishing, open access, library services platforms, and other areas related to position responsibilities.  Maintain frequent communications with vendors, repositories, professional organizations, and colleagues and make recommendations that improve the library’s ability to offer high-priority content at the most reasonable cost.

Minimum Qualifications
To be considered for rank of Assistant Librarian:

·         ALA-accredited graduate degree from a library and information science program or an advanced degree in a related field.

·         One year of electronic resources work experience in an academic library or similar setting.

·         One year of supervisory experience.

To be considered for rank of Associate Librarian:

·         All of the above plus:

·         6 years or more effective, successful experience as a librarian in an academic library or similar setting.

·         A sustained record of scholarly and/or creative activities.

·         A record of service that shows a pattern of sustained service to the profession and a university community, and the potential to assume a leadership role within the profession.

Preferred Qualifications

·         Demonstrated experience with electronic resources management throughout the electronic resources lifecycle, including acquisition, implementation, support, and evaluation.

·         Demonstrated ability to communicate and collaborate effectively with a diverse group of internal and external stakeholders, including (but not limited to) users, library staff, and vendors. Ability to communicate specialized, technical information clearly and understandably to a variety of audiences.

·         Experience supervising full-time staff, including hiring, goal setting, performance management, and formal evaluation at the individual and unit levels.

·         Demonstrated knowledge of library systems used to provide access to electronic resources and serials and their interoperability, e.g. library management systems, discovery platforms, link resolvers, and proxy servers. Experience and/or certification in Ex Libris Alma and Primo.

·         Knowledge of current trends and developments in the electronic resources market, pricing and delivery models, and scholarly publishing; knowledge of industry tools, standards, best practices, and initiatives related to electronic resource management, including MARC, Open URL, COUNTER, SUSHI, ERMI, KBART, and SERU.

·         Excellent analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills, including the ability to meet deadlines, prioritize work, learn independently, and respond to changing needs.

·         Ability to work effectively in and contribute positively to a collaborative and inclusive environment that values and leverages diverse perspectives.

·         Experience reading, interpreting, managing, and negotiating license agreements.

·         Evidence of ability to learn and apply new technologies to solve problems and/or improve efficiency.

·         Experience with project management and change management.

·         Experience collecting, analyzing, and communicating electronic resource usage statistics and other data for decision-making and effective resource allocation.

·         Knowledge of library budget processes.

·         Experience providing excellent customer service while anticipating and supporting the information needs of university faculty, staff, and students.

Background Information

Northern Arizona University requires satisfactory results for the following:  a criminal background investigation, an employment history verification and a degree verification (in some cases) prior to employment.  You may also be required to complete a fingerprint background check.

Finally, each year the Northern Arizona University Police Department releases an annual security report.  The report is a result of the federal law known as the Clery Act and contains policy statements that address the school’s policies, procedures and programs concerning safety and security including policies for responding to emergency situations and sexual offenses.  The report contains three years of data for Clery reportable crime statistics for the campus along with the most current year’s Fire Safety Report, which includes policy statements and fire statistics for Flagstaff on-campus student housing.

Assistant Librarian $56,000-$62,000 – Salary commensurate with experience and qualifications

Associate Librarian $63,000-$69,000 – Salary commensurate with experience and qualifications
