About the JMU Libraries

As a blended library and educational technology organization, JMU Libraries is an essential and deeply valued part of our university, reporting to the Provost and Senior Vice President of JMU and undergoing transformation and renewal under the leadership of a new Dean. At Madison, the Libraries includes campus educational technology, digital scholarship, and online learning services alongside foundational library collections, resources and spaces, scholarly communications and data/information literacy services, and collaborative teaching and research support. Collegial relationships with faculty and administrators across the institution run deep. Our team comprises approximately 150 staff and faculty, including tenured/tenure-track librarians and instructional designers, classified and wage staff, and administrative and professional faculty from a number of fields. Approximately 100 undergraduate and graduate student workers join the Libraries in a variety of roles.

About This Role

JMU Libraries invites applications from dynamic, collaborative, pragmatic, and service-minded leaders to fill the crucial position of Associate Dean for Discovery, Access, and Technology (DATech). The successful candidate will serve as a member of the senior leadership team reporting to the Dean of Libraries and work closely with other Associate and Assistant Deans. In this role, the AD for DATech will provide vision and leadership for library technology infrastructure and collections, including physical, digitized, born-digital, and electronic collections. This division of the Libraries includes the following areas: Library Technology (including Learning Technology Services, Web and Application Services, Systems and Operations, and Desktop Support); Scholarly Resources & Discovery (including Collections Analytics and Resource Management, Access, and Acquisitions); Metadata Strategies; Digital Collections; Physical Collections; and Interlibrary Loan and Course Reserves. Depending on the strengths and interests of the successful candidate, JMU’s Scholarly Communications and Digital Scholarship efforts may also be located in this portfolio. As a member of our Dean’s Council and the Libraries senior leadership team, the Associate Dean will participate in the overall vision, direction, and strategy of the JMU Libraries. This is a tenure-eligible instructional faculty position at JMU. The ideal candidate will come in at the rank of Associate Professor or above.

Job Responsibilities

• Provide user-centered leadership for technology, access, and collections-oriented departments including approximately 55-60 Libraries faculty and staff, including 5-7 direct reports
• Work with colleagues and campus partners to ensure the JMU Libraries proactively implements appropriate technologies that contribute to our stewardship of useful and accessible collections in both physical and digital form
• Provide leadership and nurture collaborations across the Libraries to develop and implement strategies and workflows related to metadata/discovery and preservation, the development of an inspiring web presence, and the ongoing maintenance of systems and resources
• Represent the JMU Libraries in campus conversations about information technology, computing needs, and academic software to maximize access, meet the evolving needs of our users, and contribute to more diverse and equitable futures for higher education
• Engage in relevant service and scholarly and professional development activities



• Demonstrated understanding of and/or engagement with the central roles played by IT infrastructure, scholarly resources and communications, library-based discovery and access systems, and educational technology in library operations
• Demonstrated commitment to promoting and/or enhancing diversity, equity, and inclusion within organizations and in the profession
• Progressive responsibility leading relevant technology or technical services initiatives and significant supervisory experience
• Strong ability to listen carefully and effectively communicate digital strategy and technical issues to diverse audiences
• A graduate degree in a relevant field


• Demonstrated knowledge of and/or experience with systems administration and analysis, web and applications development, and information security and privacy, including the broad theoretical context of current and emerging systems
• Demonstrated knowledge of and/or experience with practices and platforms relevant to campus computing and/or library collections and technical services
• Demonstrated knowledge of and/or experience with systems and workflows to enhance and sustain digital scholarship
