DESCRIPTION

The successful candidate will take up a new role in the NLI as Digital Preservation Manager, at Higher Executive Officer level.  This role will be specifically dedicated to the preservation of an estimated current digital holding of 60TB of web archive collection data and 65TB of digitised images.  The Digital Preservation Manager will have responsibility for safeguarding these national collections and ensuring their sustainability.

RESPONSIBILITIES

• Manage, develop and implement digital preservation policies, procedures and programme in the context of NLI’s strategic objectives, in particular digital collection building, preservation and access;
• Work with Digital Collections staff to prepare, process and manage digital materials (digitised and born-digital content) created by/donated to the NLI; advise on formats, methods of transfer, receipt and storage; process digital materials using appropriate systems/software;
• Collaborate and communicate with curatorial, conservation and collection areas to ensure digital materials remain accessible and available;
• Advise and train colleagues on issues relating to digital preservation, covering policies and practical requirements as appropriate;
• Champion digital preservation internally and externally and represent NLI at national and international level and develop relationships within the digital preservation network;

QUALIFICATIONS

Essential Requirements
• Education to degree level ;
• Postgraduate library or archive qualification or equivalent, or equivalent professional expertise from a proven track record of relevant work;
• Minimum of 2 years experience in the library, digital cultural heritage or related field;
• Experience in the development and implementation of policies and procedures relating to Digital Preservation;
• Evidence of knowledge of digital preservation theory, standards and best practice including content management, access, migration and preservation;
• Experience of management and preservation of born digital and digitised cultural heritage content including appropriate formats, methods of transfer, receipt and storage;
• Knowledge of metadata standards, data structure standards and models relevant to digital preservation and content description e.g. Dublin Core, PREMIS;
• Proven experience of promotion of good practice in digital preservation;
• Knowledge of and experience with digital repository systems and digital preservation tools;
• Evidence of strong project management skills and ability to prioritise and schedule workloads in the face of conflicting demands;
• Evidence of a strong track record of stakeholder relationship management and the ability to work well with others at all levels, including internal and external partners;

• Ability to work collaboratively with others and make a positive contribution to a team, taking a creative approach to problem solving, being proactive and using initiative;
• Ability to communicate effectively to technical and non technical users and strong advocacy skills.

Desirable Requirements
• Knowledge of library software systems;
• Experience with Unix/Linux operating systems and command line;
• Experience writing shell or other scripts;
• Knowledge and understanding of multiple formats, e.g. text, image, sound, software, multimedia, database, geographical information system, video.
