About the IS Lab

The IS Lab is a hub of activity supporting the research, instruction, and professional development of students, faculty, and staff in the Department of Information Studies.

This academic year marks the beginning of a multi-year strategic development project to enhance the IS Lab’s resources and services.  Leveraging state-of-the-art technology and practice, the IS Lab acts as a liaison between academia and industry.

A key role of the IS Lab is to help students acquire practical skills in support of the department’s curriculum. A Specialization Skills Program (SSP) is in the works, as part of the IS Lab’s developing strategic plan. Potential elements of the SSP include workshops with technical experts, an industry professional speaker series, and a research practicum.

The IS Lab houses a selective print collection and provides access to instructional resources to support the IS curriculum. Our Collection Development Policy mirrors the curricula of the IS Department’s MLIS, PhD, and Post-Master’s programs. The IS Lab’s print collection, including course reserves, is non-circulating. However, many of the books from the children’s literature collection, which includes recent and award-winning works to support various IS courses, may be borrowed. Copying is available using a BruinCard and in adherence with copyright law.

The IS Lab’s  media  preservation and archiving resources include a growing collection of audio and video processing equipment for which training is provided by IS Lab staff and faculty experts.

Announcements, policies, and resources are posted on the IS Lab’s webpage. In certain circumstances IS Lab policies necessarily may be amended. Please note effective dates.

The IS Lab is staffed by professional academic librarians and students in the Information Studies programs. Lab hours are Monday through Thursday from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm.

The IS Lab is maintained by the IS Department for the academic use of the entire UCLA community, including all GSE&IS students.

May I reserve space and assistance in the lab?

Absolutely! The IS Lab’s four zones can accommodate a variety of group sizes and activities. Zone A is suitable for larger group meetings, such as classes and workshops. In Zone B, members of the GSE&IS Community have access to computing resources, small group work spaces, and a reading area beside our library stacks. Zone C is home to our growing audio-visual transfer stations and a communal table for group work. Zone D is the perfect spot for a few people to settle in for a good read at any age; we invite our youngest community members to join us here for readings from our Children’s Book Collection. Be sure to book space in the IS Lab at least 24 hours in advance. To meet with the IS Lab Director, schedule an appointment during Office Hours. For help with course-related research, consult with our IS Lab Staff Monday through Thursday between 9am and 4pm.
